problems with vmware ws 6.5

i’ve just decided to download and play around with the 64bit version of VMware workstation 6.5. install went fine, i used the rpm version btw. in the past, when installing vmware i usually got a display msg right after the install that i should run vmwareconfig.pl first, before doing anything else, to build the modules and configure stuff. this is no longer the case with this release of vmware. the vmwareconfig.pl script is no longer present.

i thought maybe i no longer needed to do that or the script might have been built in in one of the binaries. when i tried to issue the “vmware” command on the console i got this:

modinfo: could not find module vmmon
modinfo: could not find module vmnet
modinfo: could not find module vmblock
modinfo: could not find module vmci
modinfo: could not find module vsock
modinfo: could not find module vmmon
modinfo: could not find module vmnet
modinfo: could not find module vmblock
modinfo: could not find module vmci
modinfo: could not find module vsock

obviously, the vmware modules  weren’t build during the install. i was under the suspicion that it was selinux’s fault as selinux warning msgs were popping up during the installation of vmware. when i tried to recreate the modules with this command i encountered a segmentation fault:

vmware-modconfig –console –install-all

some beings on the internet(must have been the knowledge base kids) said to delete this folder or at least move it to a diff folder:

/usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary

then recreate or rebuild the modules again:

vmware-modconfig –console –install-all

well, this did the trick for me. i was able to run “vmware” without  any problem afterwards.
